In the Fog

1–2 minutes

“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV

The 2026 Rolex 24 was filled with excitement, for about 18 hours, at least. The longest caution period in the race’s history was documented in the other 6 hours, due to fog. The cars had to parade around the track with the safety car for a total of 120 laps, lasting 6 hours and 33 minutes. While that was a great time for fans to catch some sleep, knowing they would not miss any of the action, it had to be tiring for the drivers. Nevertheless, it was necessary for safety as the spotters reported not being able to see as far as 500 yards in front of them at some points. For the sake of safety, those 120 laps were necessary.

During the night, the fog created a barrier between the drivers and the spotters. The spotters could not see the drivers, and so they were of no use to them. It was a hindrance. Before they could continue racing, the fog had to lift. In our own lives, many things can hinder us as we run life’s race on God’s team. While Jesus is our spotter, guiding us through each lap of life’s race, things can get in the way of our guidance, just like the fog.

Unconfessed sin, busyness, negative influences, and misplaced priorities are some ways our relationship with Jesus can be hindered. These things get in the way of what God wants to say to us or cause us to miss his direction in our lives entirely. By spending time behind the “safety car,” in prayer and personal devotion each day, we can block out the fog that tries to creep into our lives and fix our eyes on Jesus.

What “fog” is getting in the way of your walk with Christ? What can you do to get back on track with your spotter and run this race with perseverance?
